Sometimes, the most profound things in life are very simple.
Discipleship is one of those things. Being a Christian is being a disciple. A disciple is simply a whole-hearted follower of Jesus. 'Whole-hearted' means that Jesus is Lord of our lives. 'Follower' means that we are doing what Jesus told us to do.
Making disciples was the primary thing Jesus did before he went to the cross. Here's a brief discipleship lesson from Jesus:
- Repenting and Believing: Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:14 - 15).
- Following and Fishing: And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men (Mark 1:17).
- Denying and Taking: If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (Mark 8:34).
- Going and Making: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).
That may all seem a bit challenging. In our own strength, yeh, it is. But Jesus gave us His Spirit so we could get the job done. And it's important to remember that there is a reward for disciples. Jesus said this:
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or land, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. (Matthew 19:29)
The greatest reward of all, of course - is that we get God! Followers of Jesus get Jesus - the perfect saviour who loved us enough to give his life for us. That's good news. Disciples simply take that good news seriously enough to do everything they can to help other people enjoy the benefits of knowing God.
And that's something we take seriously at Centrepoint. If you'd like to grow as a follower of Jesus, consider getting involved in one of our Community Groups.
